It was formed from the nationalization of the "Big Four" British railway companies following the end of World War II and lasted until the gradual privatization of BR in stages between 1994 and 1997. The period of nationalization saw sweeping changes in the national railway network. A process of dieselization and electrification took place, and in 1968 steam locomotion had been entirely replaced by diesel and electric power, except for one narrow-gauger tourist line. Passengers replaced freight as the main source of business, and one third of the network was closed. For auction is a map entitled "British Rail Passenger Network 1984-1985".
