About the Book: Richard Lloyd Anderson: As a historian, I am most interested in the corroborating testimony of the Book of Mormon witnesses. I feel that they are the strongest evidence of that scripture’s divinity outside of reading the book itself. Here are modern men who can be examined closely on their astounding claim—of being commissioned by an angel’s appearance and by God’s voice to testify of ancient scripture. The eleven witnesses were interviewed by both the careful and the careless, leaving scores of accounts. After years of working with their lives and their words, I am convinced that the Book of Mormon witnesses’ printed testimonies must be taken at face value. Book Review: 5/5 stars - Definitive work on Book of Mormon Witnesses I was finally able to get my hands on a copy of this book! In discussions with critics of the Book of Mormon I still run into people who claim that the witnesses denied their testimonies or that the witnesses were completely unreliable people. I had heard of this little book and decided that I needed to know more about the life of the witnesses. The book met all of my expectations. Anderson has spent his life investigating the witnesses of the Book of Mormon and knows more about them than anybody that I know of. He had the same motivation that I did; he wanted to know if there was any truth to the common accusations against the witnesses. He starts out with a chapter that summarizes the history of the Book of Mormon including how the 11 men mentioned in this book became witnesses. The next chapter gives information on several additional witnesses of the golden plates including several women associated with the translation process. Anderson then covers the 3 witnesses with two chapters each. The first chapter on each covers the character of the witness, including statements from friends, co-workers, and relatives. In each case it is shown that they were upstanding and well-respected men in their community. The second chapter on each witness covers how they adhered to their testimony of seeing an angel and the plates. It shows from primary sources that they never denied their testimony despite ridicule, separation from the church, and time. The next two chapters cover the 8 witnesses. One chapter focuses on the 5 from the Whitmer family and the next chapter focuses on the 3 from the Smith family. He uses a similar format showing how they are respected in their community and how they never denied their testimony. The final two chapters cover common accusations against the witnesses and Anderson shows the trail of where these come from. It is shown that the sources are unreliable and highlights where the living witnesses, when they heard any hint that they had denied their testimony, when to great lengths to refute those accusations. This included those that were still separated from the church. This book is highly recommended for anybody wanting to know more about the witnesses of the Book of Mormon. --by Jeffrey Van Wagoner Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc.
