Description: CANDLESTICK POINTLewis Baltz Gus BlaisdellDesigned by Hiroshi Osaka Description: Gallery Min & Aperture, Tokyo & New York, 1989. First Edition; Black faux leather boards with tipped-in title plate on cover with printed gray title on spine, in black cardboard slipcase with matte gray title plate on front and spine; Unpaginated (136 pp., including 8 two-page gatefolds), with 12 four-color and 72 duotone plates beautifully printed on heavy matte paper by Mitsumura Printing Company, Ltd., Japan. 10-1/2 x 13-1/2 inches. Essay by Gus Blaisdell in English and Japanese. All images taken in and the Candlestick Point area in San Francisco, California. Published in conjunction with a 1989 exhibition at Tokyo's Gallery Min, "Candlestick Point" is Lewis Baltz's fascinating essay on the manmade debris, detritus, and blight scarring the San Francisco peninsula. A continuation of Baltz's "New Topographics" investigation of the industrial wasteland at San Francisco's Candlestick Point. In wide-angle and close-up views, Baltz lays bare what we'd rather not see, while at the same time luring the viewer with the perverse pleasures of his images, here echoed by the sensuous pleasure of the book itself. Condition: Near Fine Book in Very Good slipcover, which has some light shelf wear with some rubbing to edges, label affixed to slipcase separated at one edge about 1/8"; boards of book a touch shiny as a consequence of the leatherette material. Additional Information: Lewis Baltz (September 1945 – November 2014) was a visual artist and photographer who became a leader of the New Topographics movement of the late 1970s. His work has been published in a number of books, presented in numerous exhibitions, and appeared in museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, Paris, Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Cavemodern was founded in 2005 as a home for important "modern" books and works on paper. "Cave" meant a home for both the tangible touch of beautiful objects and a cozy virtual den for armchair exploration. "Modern" starts with the art and literature that went beyond realistic depictions to expressive use of color, non-traditional materials, and new techniques and mediums. Our focus has evolved to be on important pieces by cultural innovators that take their work in new, unexpected, and modern directions.
