An Attractive Copy! Combining two fads of the mid-1960s-- the spy craze and the comic-book superhero revival--T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents depicted an outfit of superpowered James Bonds. Dynamo's belt conferred superstrength and invulnerability, Noman had a cloak of invisibility, and Lightning's costume enabled him to run superfast. The trendy concept wouldn't have amounted to much had not comics legend Wally Wood been enlisted to develop characters and recruit top-notch artists, initially including himself. By the time the contents of this volume of DC's deluxe reprinting of the comic were created, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents was running out of steam after only a year. Wood worked on just two of these 20 stories; second- and third-rate hands drew most of the others. The exception is a story written and drawn by the underservedly obscure Manny Stallman, whose singular style encompasses the broad panache of early comics and storytelling sophistication that still impresses today. Earlier series volumes are better, but even the relatively lackluster examples in this one demonstrate the lightweight fun that makes T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents fondly remembered to this day.
