1st Texas Infantry – Dumfries – Virginia - 5628

Description: Original lead bullets and other relics excavated from the Spotsylvania and Wilderness Battlefields near Fredericksburg, Virginia. The battles were the start of General Grant’s 1864 “Overland Campaign” to take Richmond, Virginia. The 1st Texas saw action in both battles. At center is the remains of a harmonica; one of the personal items carried by soldiers. The two flat buttons that would have been issued with a Confederate uniform are at top. The other artifacts include percussion caps, haversack buckle and a belt adjuster. The lead bullets which have oxidized in the ground are both Confederate issue a fired .57 Enfield and a 58 Gardner round made at the Richmond Arsenal in Virginia. They both used paper cartridges. The scene was reproduced from a photograph taken in 1861 of the 1st Texas Infantry in their winter quarters near Dumfries, Virginia. The men of the 1st Texas came from East Texas and Harris & Galveston Counties. Arriving piecemeal, all the men of the 1st Texas arrived in Richmond, VA, by June 1, 1861, and were commanded by Colonel L. T. Wigfall. The regiment was part of General Hood’s famous Texas Brigade and fought in the major engagements around Fredericksburg, Virginia. The artifacts come with an 8” x 12” riker mount box as shown. We are packing the artifacts separately so they don’t scratch the glass. The black felt behind the artifacts in the picture is over soft cotton batting which allows the relic to settle into it and allows for the different thicknesses. Take the pins out of the side of the case and lift off the lid. You can place the relics however you like. Copies of the paperwork shown will come with the certificate. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
