Description: The Occult Lovecraft by H.P. Lovecraft with additional material and interpretations by Anthony Raven (signed) Illustrated by Stephen E. Fabian (signed) Published by Gerry de la Ree (signed) Essay Introductions by Frank Belknap Long and Samuel Loveman Gerry de la Ree Prepublication Proof Description: Folded paperback book published by Gerry de la Ree in 1975. This copy states on the rear cover where the limitation statement is that it is a 'Prepublication Proof' rather than being numbered as a final copy would have been. The limitation statement says the book was limited to 990 numbered copies. I assume this copy was produced before the final copies. The final copies were stapled at the spine, this copy is not stapled and shows no signs of ever having been stapled, it is simply the folded pages, inserted into a protective plastic over. The pages can be pulled out from the cover easily. Signed by the contributors Anthony Raven and artist Stephen E. Fabian on the title page without inscription or personalization. Signed by publisher Gerry de la Ree on the back over under the limitation statement. From the Publisher's Note: ... "The Occult Lovecraft is but one of these, offering several thousand words of previously published writing by the Gentleman from Providence. Presented here are two brief essays-type discussions by H.P.L., one dealing with religion and his old standby, materialism (The Cosmos and Religion), and the other going into some detail about an incantation he used in his 1925 story, "The Horror at Red Hook" (The Incantation from Red Hook). Published in conjunction with the Lovecraft wordage are two commentaries by Anthony Raven, magician, mentalist, and student of the occult. Accompanying the text are a series of appropriate drawings by the talented artist, Stephen E. Fabian, commissioned for this book. Brief introductions, written especially for this volume by two surviving members of Lovecraft's Kalem Club precede the Red Hook piece. Both Frank Belknap Long and Samuel Loveman were close friends of H.P.L.'s and spent time at his Brooklyn Heights residence in 1925. Except for the opening paragraph of the Red Hook article, which was written in 1926, the remaining Lovecraft commentary was penned in 1929 and unpublished until this time. The original handwritten manuscripts are from the collection of the publisher. While well read and able to converse or write on a wide variety of subjects, Lovecraft was not infalible. He made no claim to being an expert in the occult; rather he was merely reasonably well versed on the subject from having read those texts available to him. The material here presented gives evidence of both his strengths and weaknessess when writing on a subject with which he should have perhaps had more expertise in view of his chosen field of fiction. Condition: Binding - near fine, pages folded rather unevenly, those corners that protrude are slightly bumped, slight soiling of the covers, book is not fastened into the plastic covers, which are easily removed. Plastic Cover - near fine, there are two pieces of scotch tape holding the plastic front and back covers to the plastic spine clip, which could easily be removed, otherwise fine.
