Outside planting is best in the late fall while they are dormant or in early spring after all chance of frost and plants are well established. If your soil is poor, mix it half and half with potting soil. Use a tree and shrub fertilizer after established according to package directions. INFORMATION: The Beautyberry plant, sometimes called a French Mulberry or Indian Paint Bush, is well known for its beautiful ornamental purple berries which last for weeks in the fall. They produce pretty bouquets of small light pink/purple flowers all the way up the stems in the spring where the berries will grow in the fall. The berries become edible upon reaching full ripeness and are a dark purple/magenta color. The berries can be eaten raw but they are best when used to make jelly. Some say the jelly tastes like an elderberry jelly. It's best to prune American Beautyberry shrubs in late winter or very early spring. The simplest way is to cut the entire shrub back to 6 or 8 inches above the ground. It will grow back rapidly with a neat, rounded shape. *Jelly Directions: Combine 1.5 qts of berries with 1 qt. water, boil for 20 minutes and then strain out the solids. Add 4.5 cups of sugar and one envelop of Sure Jell to the liquid. Bring the liquid back up to boil for two minutes, skimming off any foam. Pour the hot jelly into sterilized jars and seal.
