The reason the coin weighs more than a troy ounce is because in addition to 1 oz of fine silver there is also a small amount of copper. The copper is the "extra" weight. Older Britannias minted prior to 2013 are made in Britannia Standard Silver, which is a higher grade of Sterling with a millesimal fineness of .95833, or 23 out of 24 parts pure silver.
