Especially when the motorcycle isa fire-breathing 1000cc sportbike at a racetracYet here I was at Kawasaki's new Autopolis test track in Japan athe world launch of the 2006 ZX-10R, caught up in a battle ofegos and jingoistic pride with three other journalists, when I foundmyself yawning so hard I nearly overshot a hairpin. What was happening here? Wasn't this the baddest-ass sport-bike on the planet? The superbike some magazines had heralded asthe best ever and others warned was too much for mere mortals?Had Kawasaki's engineers neutered the once-testy 10R to the Ipoint it was lulling me to sleep?’Hardly. Jet lag was the culprit. The new ZX-10R is faster thanever—it just doesn't feel like it.Just so we're clear on this, I loved the 2004-05 model. Sure, itwas brutal and prone to wobble under acceleration—so is everyMotoGP bike I've ridden. If Kawasaki's engineers had just tamed it atad with a steering damper and done something about the occa-sional missed upshift, I'd have considered it perfect. But that's justwhere they started.Sitting through the technical presentation and sifting through thepress kit, it was easy to be overwhelmed by the number of changeswrought to the '06 model. It's essentially an all-new motorcycle.Fortunately—and inexplicably for the first time in my two decadesas a moto-joumalist—this intro was held in Japan, with the entiredevelopment team in attendance. So I seized the opportunity to asksome questions.... And much more! 11165
