The series of one dollar coins recognised and celebrated individual achievements, and commemorated unique Australians who have made an extraordinary contribution to our society. This first coin in the series features Mary MacKillop. Mary MacKillop was a teacher and a Catholic Nun, born in Victoria in 1842. 1n 1866 she founded the sisters of St. Joseph and set up a parish school for underprivileged children in South Australia. Under Mary's guidance, the order established schools and charitable institutes across Australia and was devoted to the care of orphans, neglected children, the homeless, the sick and the aged., she also set up a school for underprivileged children. A truly Inspirational Australian. The one dollar coin is sealed in a colourful see-both-sides card of issue, with the reverse design featuring an image of Mary Mackillop with a guiding hand on the future generation.
