Description: This 2009 Philadelphia minted Formative Years Reverse Lincoln cent has a large TERMINAL REVERSE DIE CRACK from the rim at 7:00, and extending northward through the "E" in EPU to Lincoln's right boot & mallet. Die cracks occur when the dies age, and continued pressure on busy design elements cause actual cracks to form in the working dies. Coins struck by these damaged dies reflect the cracked working die in reverse. Certain die cracks are very rare and potentially valuable to collectors. Mint inspectors examine coins and remove defective dies as soon as the resulting coins with die cracks are spotted, sometimes creating a rarity. The last two photos only show example surfaces of coins similar to the ones pictured above, just to show the variety of 2009 cent offered. A rare error to add to your collection!
