Description: Mint: Monnaie de Paris Denomination: €2 Quality: UNC Issue limit: 170,000 Alloy: Base Metal Diameter: 25.75 mm Weight: 8.5 grams Design: Noel Galea Bason This is the fifth coin in a series of seven dedicated to Malta's unique prehistoric sites. Skorba is a UNESCO World Heritage Site found in the hamlet of Żebbiegħ at the limits of Mġarr. The temple ruins – which are believed to date to around 3,500 BC – were built on top of an earlier settlement dating to around 5,000 BC. The site was first brought to the attention of Temi Zammit in the early 20th century. Some archaeological investigations were conducted in 1937, but the site remained virtually untouched until the excavation campaigns undertaken by British archaeologist David H. Trump in the 1960s. The coin reverse shows the common €2 side. The obverse (national side), designed by Noel Galea Bason, shows a representation of Ta’ Skorba Temples. The €2 commemorative coin has only been issued with a low limit of 200,000 coins (170,000 uncirculated in rolls without any mint mark, 10,000 in the BU sets with F mint mark only, and 20,000 in BU quality packaged in a coin card with the French cornucopia mint mark only).
