Description: The story of Princess Bari is a traditional Korean myth that has been translated roughly one hundred times by scholars. While in some versions she fails to become a deity, shes widely accepted as the patron goddess of shamans and the conductor of the souls of the dead. The story goes that her parents, the king, and the queen, fall deathly ill and can only be saved if Bari returns with medicinal water from Western Heaven. She does so, thus saving the lives of her parents. Her story is often told during funeral rites. The obverse field of the 2023 South Korean Silver Princess Bari Medal shows the image of the Doggaebi. The image of this hobgoblin-like creature is said to ward off evil spirits. Koreans would hang the effigy of the Doggaebi from their homes with this intention in mind. Identifying marks of the medal surrounds the image. The reverse side of the 2023 1 oz Silver Princess Bari Medal shows the Princess Bari. The Princess is seen in front-facing relief wearing an elegant headdress. Shes holding a fan in one hand with a portal prominently shown behind her.
