This study includes tactical and certain non-tactical employment of transport aircraft in the war, whether or not designated as Troop Carrier units. The original purpose of this project was to prepare a report of the Troop Carrier arm of the Army Air Forces which might serve as basic data for use by professional historians who later will write the official history of the Army Air Forces in World War II. Additionally, it was hoped the report would provide a record for analysis of the varied employment of transport aircraft, tactical and non-tactical, to enable more efficient reorganization planning for the peace time establishment of this arm. In a sense the project also served as a service-test of historical data in the files of Army Air Force Historical Office for a specialized study. In that respect, the data proved invaluable. Certain, but relatively few, omissions and inadequacies have been filled by personal interviews with veteran Troop Carrier personnel, and/or personal knowledge of the project officer. Troop Carrier histories in A.A.F. archives generally are rated superior to the histories of other air arms by the Army Air Force historians.
