There are three primary types: Knitted elastic is soft, strong and appropriate for most apparel items, especially waistbands. It does not narrow, curl or lose elasticity when stretched and is not affected by needle piercing, making it suitable for direct garment application (not inserted into a casing). Knitted elastic is commonly made from 1/4” up to 12” wide. Braided elastic is more coarse than knitted elastic and less comfortable on direct contact with skin. It narrows when stretched. Because it narrows and curls when stretched and loses its elasticity and shape retention when pierced or stitched through, it is used mostly in casings (i.e. waistbands on pajama pants) or for applications where stronger retention ("snap back") is desired. For example, surgical masks or headbands. Other applications include sleeve hems, swimwear and leg bands. Braided elastic has distinctive lengthwise, parallel ribs and is generally not made more than 1” wide. Woven elastic is strong, thick, and often referred as “no roll” or "non-roll" elastic. It resists rolling and twisting and does not narrow when stretched. Because of its thickness, it is used mostly on heavier weight fabrics but can also be used on waistbands, leg and sleeves. It is easily identified by it's basket weave pattern and pronounced horizontal and vertical ribs.
