Water hyacinth is a free-floating perennial aquatic plant native to tropical and sub-tropical South America. With broad, thick, glossy, ovate leaves, water hyacinth may rise above the surface of the water as much as 1 meter in height. They have long, spongy and bulbous stalks. The feathery, freely hanging roots are purple-black. An erect stalk supports a single spike of 8-15 conspicuously attractive flowers, mostly lavender to pink in color with six petals. When not in bloom, water hyacinth may be mistaken for frog's-bit or Amazon frogbit. Always rinse any item before you add to tank or pond. Using water from tank or pond in cases of plants. They are grown in natural sun light. Plants are very hardy and do well in ponds and fish tanks. Care of water hyacinth is minimal, as the plant has no serious pest or disease issues. May turn shades of yellow when shipped. This is normal. As the leaves spot and turn yellow, simply trim back the old leaves to allow the growth energy to go into the greener leaves. Growth is very slow in winter, but as the weather warms your water hyacinth will grow and quickly multiply. Same is true if you place them in tanks. Also, do not over heat plants with lights. In Hot Temperatures plants are packed with no bag. Evaporation is needed so plants will not melt (lose all their roots) and or die in bag. Your box may arrive a little soggy. Common when it is so hot out for some of the roots to fall off. In the dead of the summer we trim the roots, because they all fall off. Shipping can cause them to look nothing like they are shipped. Never know what Post Office will do to them. In a day or 2 of floating them, leaves will open and they will look a lot better and larger. Many should come back, even if roots have melted off.
