The Battle of the Virginia Capes, fought by the French navy and the British fleet, resulted in a French victory blocking British access to the Chesapeake Bay. American and French armies laid seige to the isolated British forces of Lord Cornwallis. This forced him to surrender on October 19, 1781. A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. These stamps have been designated as Scott Numbers 1938a.
