It is common in the wild and it is widely cultivated because it is a durable native plant that is easy to grow and it has beautiful, glossy leaves and abundant fruits. The leaves are held upright on the stems. It is often grown as a hedge and occasionally as a small specimen tree. It occurs in wetlands and along the coast. The fruits attract wild animals and the small flower clusters provide nectar for honeybees. The purple or red, sweet fruit is consumed raw or cooked into jams and jellies. The seed can be eaten raw also or roasted. It yields edible oil. Both fruits and leaves, on the other hand, yield black dye. The fruits are produced throughout the year but mainly in the summer and autumn.
