This Bottom Tap is a taper tap cut with a water-jet to keep the tap cool to maintain hardness.A Bottom Tap allows chasing and tapping threads very close to the bottom of blind holes as found in the cast-iron base of the plane, in the frog and also in the slotted round nuts used to secure knobs and totes. This bottom tap will allow threading a blind hole to within 1/16” of the bottomHigh Speed Steel (HSS) will stay sharp longer than High Carbon Steel (HCS). Wholesale cost of HSS is 12 times that of HCS.
