It was awarded as the first prize in the premier event at the coursing meeting, the Tenants Cup. The presentation inscription, to both front & back of the teapot reads: "CARMICHAEL COURSING MEETING. THE TENANTS CUP. OCT. 1901. WON BY MR. A. REID with "GRAFTER" Weight: 745.3 gm. Height: 120 mm. Length: 280 mm. Width: 130 mm. Hall Mark: Edinburgh 1902. Maker's Mark: Hamilton & Inches. Carmichael Hare Coursing Meetings: Sir Wyndham Charles James Carmichael Anstruther, born in 1824, was the Laird of the Carmichael Estates in Lanarkshire, Scotland and was well-liked for taking great interest in his Estates and the community. He was elected Member of Parliament for South Lanarkshire and served as MP from 1874 - 1886 and also held the post of Hereditary Carver to the Royal Household in Scotland. He was President of the National Coursing Union, which was evidently his greatest passion, for he was recognised as one of the finest coursing dod studs and the Carmichael Spring & Autumn Coursing Meetings were reputed as the finest in the country. The "Tenants Cup" trophy was originally presented by Sir Wyndham Anstruther in 1892 to one of his tenants, James Galloway of Bogmoors Farm, Pettinain, who on his behalf had won for him the premier race at the Carmichael Autumn Coursing Meeting that year. The perpetual Tenants Cup is a large silver bowl with the winners names engraved each year. The winners would be presented with a silver trophy to keep such as the silver teapot for sale. Hare coursing of course no longer takes place so the Carmichael family donated the silver bowl to the Upperward District of Lanarkshire as a trophy for the sport of curling. It was renamed the Galloway Trophy and is still competed for today. Summary: As can be seen from the photos & history (above) this is a rare trophy in the history of hare coursing in Scotland. It was awarded as 1st Prize at the prestigious Carmichael Autumn Coursing Meeting of 1901, 123 years ago. A real piece of Scottish coursing history. Good luck!
