This is a 20" x 24" Original and Vintage oil painting on canvas by the important Utah plein air painter Hilma Mole Payne, 1901-1973. The image is a view of a meadow titled 'Cows in the Meadow' on the label on back. Signed at bottom left 'Mole'. Fine condition. Unframed. From the estate in Albuquerque. The Biography Follows: Mrs. Payne was born Hilma Mole in Morgan Utah of English and German descent. She was a graduate of Weber College and the University of Utah where she obtained a Masters Degree in Fine Arts. In 1928, she studied at the Julian Academy in Paris and later at the California School of Arts and Crafts in Berkley. Hilma Mole Payne was a student of the internationally recognized artist J.T. Harwood. Some of her accomplishments include: The painting of the State Capitol Building in the Salt Lake City, Paintings exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts in New York City, President of the Palette Club of Ogden Utah where she had a one man show of her paintings at the Utah Power and Light Auditorium Jan. 1955. Hilma held her first one man show in 1922 while still a student at the University. It was held at the Commercial Club in the Boston Bldg in Salt Lake City. Afterwards, she was invited to hold another one man show at the Civic Auditorium on State Street. She was known to have exhibited in Ogden Utah, Oakland California, Pocatello Idaho, Brigham City and Heber. She also exhibited with the Utah Art Institute at the 32nd Annual Exhibition held a the State Capitol Building in Salt Lake in 1934. Hilma was one of the early Utah artists who were promoted by "Utah's First Lady of the Arts" Alice Merrill Horne. She was chosen to exhibit at her Annual Window Show of Paintings with her oil titled Golden Autumn Themes. Her style would be considered Impressionist, and her favorite subjects to paint were regional Utah landscapes.
