Description: Historic 9ct gold & enamel rugby union badge/medal relating to the first ever Wales v France international match which took place on 2nd March 1908 at the National Stadium, Cardiff. The competition was the 1908 Home Nations Championship and Wales won the game 36 - 4. It is possible the badge/medal was awarded to players in the game but it is more likely it was awarded to a Committee or Council member (further research is recommended). The front of this beautiful medal is embossed "WFU" for Welsh Football Union. In addition there is a shield depicting the French Fleur de Lys and another depicting Welsh Dragons. In between there is the Prince of Wales Feathers mounted above a rugby ball in front of two leeks. The lower edge is embossed: "INTERNATIONAL MATCH MARCH 2, 1908". Included with the badge is a photo reprint depicting action from the game on 2nd March 2008. 9ct Gold Medal: Weight: 12.9 gm. Width: 30 mm. Height: 40 mm. Hall Mark: Birmingham 1907. Maker's Mark: H.B.C. (Crouch, Cardiff). Wales v France Rugby Union Internationals: The first match took place on 2nd March 1908 and in total the two countries have played each other 102 times with Wales winning 51 times, France 48 times & three draws. The early years of the fixture were dominated by Wales who won 18 of the first 19 matches. Summary: As can be seen from the photos this is an historic item for collectors of early rugby union memorabilia. Good luck!
