Description: DK1PORT3 An original Hand colored lithograph from the first edition of the three volume set of "History of the Indian Tribes Of North America" Pa-She-Nine "A Chippewa Chief". Daniel Rice and James Clark, Published Philadelphia, 1843. 14-1/2"x 18-1/4. ORIGINAL EDITION, FULL SIZE. A Rare Original Lithograph from the three volume set produced during the 1830's through the 1840's. The three volume set contains superb lithographs that were based upon portrait paintings of Native American warriors, chiefs and women. The majority of the paintings were by Charles Bird King, a Washington artist who was well known for his portraits of James Monroe, John C. Calhoun, John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay. But he became famous for his portraits of Native Americans. Ironically, King never saw his subjects in their natural settings. All of his portraits were either copied from original watercolor sketches done by James Otto Lewis, or they were painted from life when the Native Americans sat in King's studio in Washington. The three volume set of lithographs was begun when in 1832-1833, Thomas Mckenney commissioned the American artist Henry Inman to copy the original Native American portraits that hung in the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington D.C. The work was titled "History of the Indian Tribes of North America" and the lithographs are popularly known as " Mc Kenney and Hall's" as Mc Kenney was the creator of the project and Hall wrote the text.
