Description: This 1843 First Edition book is in good shape considering the age. There is intermittent foxing on the pages and some folds towards the last pages as shown. The cover shows shelf wear with the paper being torn on the spine and there appears to be some tape applied as shown. There is a signature and address of the previous owner on the inside cover. This is truly an amazing book the way he lists the different walks of life and their diet which I will also include in the photos. Please refer to the photos for reference and your opinion on the book condition. New York: Fowlers and Wells,, 1843. First American edition, published very shortly after the first London edition. This fascinating treatise on nutrition, providing a complete classification of foods and analysing their chemical properties, was based on a series of evening lectures Pereira gave at the newly formed Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. An accomplished pharmacologist and physician, Jonathan Pereira (1804-1853) was the author of The Elements of Materia Medica and Therapeutics (1842), widely regarded as the major English work on the subject. Pereira worked as a lecturer throughout his entire career, holding positions at the Aldersgate Dispensary, London Hospital, and University of London. Eventually, he became professor of materia medica at the School of Pharmacy, part of the Pharmaceutical Society. "His reputation and enthusiasm for the improvement of pharmacy were of great value to the founders of the Pharmaceutical Society... Pereira became a close friend of Bell [one of the founders] and had considerable influence on the editorial policy of the Pharmaceutical Journal, contributing numerous articles on the materia medica. He... encouraged Bell to form a committee of leading scientists and pharmacists for the advancement of pharmacology" (ODNB). His Treatise on Food and Diet examines the nutritive qualities of food, their digestibility, gives advice on the correct number of meals per day and their intervals, and recommends different specific diets for children, pregnant women, the sick, and members of the army. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, spine and covers decoratively blocked in blind. Engraved plate, 2 leaves of publisher's advertisements at rear.
