Playbill for The Music Box theatre's production of "Absurd Person Singular", October 1974, signed on page 9. Actress GERALDINE PAGE (1924-1987) took home the 1985 Best Actress Academy Award for The Trip to Bountiful after being nominated for Oscars seven times: for Best Actress for Summer and Smoke (1961), Sweet Bird of Youth (1962) and Interiors (1978) and for Best Supporting Actress honors for Hondo (1953, her debut film), You're a Big Boy Now (1966), Pete 'n' Tillie (1972) and The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984). Page, who had begun her acting career as a stage actress, had received raves for her performance in the off-Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke, and began her film career the following year. She also won two Emmy Awards for her portrayals of Truman Capote's eccentric mother in A Christmas Memory (1967) and The Thanksgiving Visitor (1969). Page was married to actor Rip Torn from 1961 until her death in 1987. TONY ROBERTS' (b. 1939) long-term friendship and professional relationship with comedian/writer/director Woody Allen began when Roberts was cast as Diane Keaton's husband in Allen's Broadway production Play It Again, Sam in 1969. Since that time, Roberts has appeared in such Allen efforts as Annie Hall (1977), Stardust Memories (1980), A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982) and Radio Days (1987). He co-starred in the 1977 television series Rossetti and Ryan. Roberts has also appeared in numerous theater performances between 1962 and 2009, including "Play it Again, Sam", "Arsenic and Old Lace", "Victor/Victoria", and "Barefoot in the Park". English actress CAROLE SHELLEY (1939-2018) won a Tony (as Best Actress in a Play) for The Elephant Man (1979), and has been nominated for three other Tonys: Absurd Person Singular (1975), Stepping Out (1987) and most recently Billy Elliot (2009). She created the role of Madame Morrible in Wicked (2003). On film, she starred as Aunt Clara in Bewitched (2005), and has been a voice actress in several Disney animations. Her allusion in this letter to an unhappy incident is unclear. When she wrote it, she was appearing on Broadway in The Norman Conquests (December 1975 - June 1975). LARRY BLYDEN (1925-1975) received Tony nominations for The Flower Drum Song (1959) and Absurd Person Singular (1975), and won one for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1972, Best Featured Actor as the slave Hysterium). He also found success as a TV game show host, including What's My Line. Six weeks after co-hosting the Tony award ceremony, Blyden died under mysterious circumstances in Morocco, in what was either an auto accident or a murder. Stage, screen and television actress SANDY DENNIS (1937-1992) won two consecutive Tony Awards (for Best Supporting or Featured Actress - Dramatic for A Thousand Clowns in 1963 and for Best Actress - Dramatic for Any Wednesday in 1964) as well as the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Dennis, who was working on Sweet November in New York, was unable to attend the Oscar ceremonies). She was also honored with the Theatre World Award for her Broadway debut in 1961, and Dennis was nominated for Golden Globes for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe? and The Out of Towners (1970). Dennis, who was first seen on television in The Guiding Light (1956), went on to guest star in a number of series, including Naked City, The Fugitive, Police Story, The Love Boat and Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and she appeared in several made-for-TV movies. Dennis made her film debut in Splendor in the Grass (1961), and her other big screen credits include Up the Down Staircase (1967), Sweet November (1968), A Touch of Love (1969), Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982), Parents (1989) and The Indian Runner (1991, her last film).
