Description: "Action at Aquila" is a Civil War novel set in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia during the autumn of 1864. As Union troops advance up the Valley burning and destroying crops and farmsteads in order to break the South's will to wage war, Union Col. Nathaniel Franklin flinches at burning the house of a Confederate officer; he later realizes that he is in love with the officer's widow. The author, William Hervey Allen (1889-1949), is known as a pioneer of the contemporary American historical novel. His work was based on word-of-mouth reminiscences by Civil War veterans, both Union and Confederate, and contemporary newspapers and manuscripts. Very good condition. Stamped blue boards with gilt lettering. Binding is solid. Text is clean and unmarked. Dust jacket has wear on heel and head of spine and on edges; it is price clipped and protected by a plastic cover.
