Description: We purchased this pendant at an auction where it was described as a "Benin Bronze Pendant." This may be so. However, to us it most closely resembles an Adinkra (a visual symbol representing a proverb or a concept) known as Sankofa. That particular adinkra is associated with the art and language of the people of Ghana. In the Twi language, "Sankofa" is an expression meaning "go back and get it!" The associated proverb counsels that it isn't a bad thing to go back and get something you've forgotten...as demonstrated by the Sankofa bird bending its neck to reach backward for its abandoned egg. We must never be so proud as to ignore the wisdom of the past. This pendant is 4.25 inches long and 3.5 inches across at its widest point.
