Purchased a few years ago and previous owner purchased about 25 years ago. Attribute age ~ 30 years to mid century. This is a beautiful Mossi Carved Wood Female Statue from Burkina Faso. The sculptors formed a separate caste and lived in separate quarters; they married exclusively within the caste. They were feared by their neighbors and participated actively in rituals. They made jewelry, metal and wood sculpture, statues, and masks. Maintaining good relations with the ancestors and a variety of supernatural forces is a major concern of Mossi ritual and motivates art production in the region. Figures are used by the ruling class to validate political power. For the most part female, linked to the power of the chiefs, these figures commemorated ancestors and were kept inside the hut of the oldest of the wives. They appeared only at the funeral of the sovereign and at the time of the annual sacrifice when the first fruit of the harvest would be offered. Powerfully, beautifully, phenomenally crafted hardwood statue, this feminine ancestor statue of the MOSSI tribe. Proud, confident, powerful appearance. Partly due to its attitude. The head is hanging slightly to the back, delivering a powerful expression. The body seems strong and it has some smooth, rounded shapes. Lines are put here and there. Though the color is deep brown, the patina by use and aging makes is more avid with light spots here and there, clearly visible on the photos. The knees are slightly bent and the legs stand apart somewhat. This fabulous female maternity figure would be a wonderful addition to your collection or home. Sits on wood stand. 12" tall on stand 3" wide Shows some age, loss of patina, and a hairline crack on back as shown, but overall in good condition. A collectors item
