ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Mega-Ultra-Rare Antique Circa 1910s-1920s Religious/Inspirational Artist’s Presentation Proof Preceding the Regular Edition Run of the Color Aquatint Etching Featuring a Serene Interior Church Scene Depicting Two Devote Parishioners Quietly Praying in Contemplation—One at Left in Distance Kneeling & the Other at Right Bowing Forward Under the Large Sculptural Crucifix of Jesus on the Cross, titled in French, “Recueillement” (Translates: “Recollection/Contemplation”) as understood in respect to the spiritual life, means attention to the presence of God in the soul, after the original painting by the well-known listed painter, etcher, watercolorist, pastelist & draughtsman, ‘Albert Geudens’ (Belgian, 1869-1949). See Brief Artist Biography below. Print Info: The artist did not hand-sign this particular print due to the fact that he made it as a very limited ‘Presentation Proof’ (“Épreuve de Présentation”) which was written in the French term by the artist lower-left in the bottom outer margin area just beneath the image, and was printed before the regular edition and/or ltd. edition run was printed, which he would then typically sign in pencil—A ‘Presentation Proof’ is an impression equal in quality to the numbered edition, which are presented by the artist as a gift to special collaborators involved in the project whose contributions the artist wishes to recognize. The ‘Presentation Proof’ is a long-standing tradition in the printmaking profession and provides special collaborators with important samples of their work for their portfolio. The artists name and title, ‘Geudens. Recueillement’, is written in pencil lower-right in the outer margin corner, with an illegible & faintly written brief notation above it, also in pencil, as well as another illegibly written word lower-left in the outer margin corner respectively that appears like, ‘gérant’ perhaps, which translates to ‘manager’, so maybe Geudens made this for his personal manager or an art dealer who manages his artwork in his gallery or bookstore??? The Aquatint is on a beautiful medium-heavier weight cream-colored laid watermarked ‘Van Gelder Zonen’ (With Crown) Holland-made paper stock with deckled edges. Brief Artist Biography: Albert Geudens (January 3, 1869 in Mechelen–March 28, 1949 in Schaerbeek) was a Belgian portrait and genre painter, etcher, watercolorist, pastelist and draughtsman. He was born with the full given name listed on his birth certificate as Albert Charles Christine Edouard Geudens born on January 3, 1869 in Mechelen, Antwerp, Belgium to painter, Jean François Geudens (AKA Jan Frans Geudens, 1835- ) and Anne-Maria-Ludwina (née Polspoel) Geudens (1838-1877) who were married on August 14, 1858 in Mechelen, Antwerp, Belgium and he had older siblings to include, Marie Jeanne Geudens (1861- ), Gustave Louis Geudens (1866- ) and a younger sister that died young, Amélie Marie-Mathilde Geudens (1871-1872). Albert Geudens was a student of Willem Geets at the Mechelen Academy of Fine Arts. From 1890-1891 he continued his studies at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen with Albrecht De Vriendt. Geudens mainly painted views of Mechelen and interiors of churches and béguinages (architectural complexes for lay religious communities), as well as bourgeois salons and portraits. He repeated the same themes in his etchings. He exhibited at art salons in Brussels, Antwerp, Liège, Barcelona and Venice. After his mother’s passing in 1877, Albert’s father, who also went by Jan Frans Geudens, remarried to Maria Joanna Josephina (née Van Der Elst) Geudens on August 16, 1882 in Mechelen, Antwerp, Belgium and they had a son that only lived for one day, Sn. Geudens (1883-1883). Albert Geudens married Fernande Jeanne (née Warnie) Geudens (1884- ) on October 31, 1908 in Brussels, Belgium. Albert Geudens died on March 28, 1949 in Schaerbeek (Brussels), Belgium. (Compiled & written by Mark Strong of Meibohm Fine Arts, Inc., East Aurora, NY 14052, meibohmfinearts site.) Size & Condition: The sheet size with wide margins is 25-3/8” x 20”, Etching/Plate image size is 19-9/16” x 15-5/8”. The Aquatint Etching is in Fair-Good Rare+ condition for its antique age with absolutely no color fade at all on this wonderful piece with crisp detail & line-work, rich colors & wonderful tones. Some of the darker line-work & areas of the etching are very slightly raised (due to heavy ink) which gives the piece a very slight texture and really makes it stand out better visually. This Etching has been in a drawer amongst other etchings & engravings since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time. No tears! There are three extremely slight horizontal creases (not hard-creases at all), parallel to each other (about 1-3/4” apart), running side-to-side at a very slight angle on the sheet through the center of the image area that aren’t too noticeable at all since being mostly in the dark areas and certainly don’t detract from the image itself, from most likely being stored in a stand-up case this whole time where it was accidentally put back improperly into the case or moved when put back at some point with a little more slight downward pressure than required which subsequently caused the very slight creases of the paper bending a bit in those areas, but thankfully they haven’t caused any ink-cracking and would likely flatten better and not really be noticeable (if at all) once it is mounted, matted & framed-up behind glass. There are other extremely minimal & very slight small crescent-creases scattered here & there in the image area which aren’t even really noticeable except mostly from behind and aren’t worth mentioning. Ultra-minimal (maybe a couple dozen or so) very tiny & very faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which are barely noticeable here & there in the outer margin areas (none noticeable in image area) and aren’t really worth mentioning either (negligible). Other slight small creases scattered here & there in the outer margin areas, along a few outer margin edges and in the outer margin corners with a few associated small dog-ear bends—any & all outer margin issues are completely negligible since the margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out; Negligible/no real or significant toning of the paper stock from age to speak of, especially amidst the cream color of the paper stock itself. This beautiful antique aquatint etching has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!! Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
