In 2020, Alex Katz exhibited Trees, a new series of three monumental paintings featuring early spring trees in Pennsylvania, at the chapel Sant’Andrea de Scaphis in Rome, Italy. From this series, Katz selected two paintings to be envisioned as prints using lithography, woodcut, and silkscreen techniques. Honoring the majestic presence of the earth's landscapes, both prints elevate the perspective of the trees to express a reverence for nature and its cyclical processes. Tree 8 is a 6-run lithograph and woodcut print with the three initial woodcut runs building the crisp, blue background and defining the tree with sparse limbs to allow the wood grain to be visible throughout the print. The final three lithographic runs of orange, white and black translate the artist's gestural brushstrokes to generate the highlights and shadows forming the trunk and branches, echoing the reflections of light in early spring. “Realist painting has to do with leaving out a lot of detail. His bright figurative paintings typically depict two-dimensional landscapes, marine scenes, flowers, humans or animals. Widely recognized for his role as a precursor to the Pop Art movement, Alex Katz takes cues from everyday visual culture like advertising and cinema. Katz began experimenting with printmaking in the 1950s, which soon evolved to be a central aspect of his artistic practice. In addition to his large-scale paintings, Katz’ oeuvre encompasses a range of print editions employing a variety of techniques, including silkscreens, linoleum cuts, lithographs and etchings. Alex Katz is one of America's leading painters. His work has been the subject of nearly 200 solo exhibitions since 1954. His portraits and landscapes capture American life in a flat, elegant and realistic style all his own. Now 94, Katz is receiving increased attention with recent solo exhibitions in Spain, Italy, Austria and New York. Katz is best known for his images of individuals and groups, usually portrayed in social gatherings, that evoke a fashionable moneyed milieu and are rendered in a cool flattened style. His paintings are marked by a simplified line that emphasises forms and colours set against flat backgrounds. He began making figurative paintings in the late 1950's when their iconic quality and emotional distance was totally against the grain of the emotionally heightened and gestural works of the Abstract Expressionists. In the late 1950's he also made his first lino and woodcuts, beginning a life-long interest in printmaking. In 1986 the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY mounted a major retrospective of his work and he was also shown at P.S.1, Museum, NY in 1998.
