Description: Plate 18: American Osprey A very attractive and somewhat scarce chromolithographed plate by J. L. Ridgway and R. Ridgway from The Hawks and Owls of the United States in Their Relation to Agriculture (U.S. Department of Agriculture Division of Ornithology and Mammalogy Bulletin No. 3) by A. K. Fisher and C. Hart Merriam. The Secretary of Agriculture, Government Printing Office, Washington, 1893. These were taken from a disintegrating book in order to preserve the plates (I discourage taking books apart for the illustrations unless there is no way to salvage the book - that is the case here as the binding was broken and some plates are already missing). For anyone interested, the book is available digitally via the internet archive. Page size is slightly smaller than 5.75 by 8.875 inches (14.5 x 22.5 cm). Plate will come with its original tissue guard, which may be detached or attached depending on the plate. The colors are very nice, and despite the flaws they remain very attractive. The plates are all rough where they were bound into the book. Please see the images. Condition: Generally the condition of the plates varies as there was some water damage to the book. For the most part the water damage was limited to the lower edge and did not impact the bird images themselves. Specific impact of water damage will be described below and will be very evident in the images. Not all plates were equally affected. Please examine them closely. This plate's condition is: Fair. Overall there is some edgewear to the paper. There is water damage and water staining to the lower edge (which encroached on the title), the center right edge, and the lower right corner. There is a stain about an inch to the upper right of the bird's head. For all auctions, please consider the images to be part of the description. When a flaw is described I try to show images of it as well, but the general condition is reflected by the images. I will combine shipping for these.
