Boards full bound in maroon cloth with gilt stamping to spine. Dust jacket generally scuffed, foxed, toned, and creased with rubbing to margins. Creased on front fold out to tuck away the price. Minor tears to back flap's joint and corners. Verso foxed. Board corners and spine ends bumped and lightly shelfworn with crease to middle of spine. Edges foxed. Head of book block pulling away from spine and binding slightly cocked but sound. Endsheets, prelims, and all page margins foxed; otherwise fairly clean. Abrasion to first free endsheet, likely from erasing previous owner's name. Small rust spotting to verso of first free endsheet from previous paperclip bookmark. A scarce and Very Good copy in a Very Good or better dust jacket. Set at the Banbury Grammar School in Oxford where Burgess taught English in the 50s, the story follows the staff and pupil's attempt to overthrow liberal Headmaster Woolton. Burgess based many of the characters on real people he knew and worked with at Banbury, including Miss Bustin, later Lady Mayoress of Banbury, who filed a libel suit against him for her lusty characterization. She won and unsold copies of the 1961 version were pulped. A revised edition was produced in 1970 with the defamatory elements removed. This suppressed 1961 edition, however, has maintained it's libelous material.
