Under the direction of Samuel Gridley Howe (1801-1876), The New England Institution for the Education of the Blind in Boston began publishing works in this raised letter format. By 1842 they had produced not only a New Testament, but other works such as a history and geography, grammar and spelling books. Raised lettering dominated Braille for most of the century even though it was available concurrently. The Paris School for Blind Youth did not adopt Braille's system until a few years after his death in 1852. In America, it had to compete with the "New York Point" system, another dot format - some schools taught one system, other schools taught the other system. It wasn't until the 1890s that relatively efficient dot system volumes could be produced, and it wasn't until 1909 that the American Printing House for the Blind began printing in Braille (and a while longer before it was the "universal" system).
