It comes with a scabbard with matching serial number! The M1874 bayonet was a conversion of the M1866 Chassepot design that enabled the use of centerfire cartridges. They were produced by Chatellerault, St. Etienne and Tulle. This was made by St. Etienne. These bayonets are marked on the spine with the factory, month and year of production. Overall, this bayonet is in Fair - Good Plus condition, considering its age (The blade is in much better shape than the pommel, guard and scabbard). The press catch is functional with stiff spring tension. The catch has oxidized throughout with some pitting on the button. The pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They both have heavy oxidation and some pitting. There is not much of the finish left. The two (2x) rivets securely fasten the wood grip panels. They also have oxidized. The grip panels have light compressions and scrapes. The wood has darkened with age. The blade is in much better condition than the rest of the bayonet, probably because it was stored inside. The T-back spine and sides have light handling marks, but no notable wear. There are no nicks or dings on the blade edge and it appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The finish is in the white. The top of the spine is marked "Mre d'Armes de St. Etienne Fevrier 1882". The right ricasso and right side quillon have proof marks. The left side quillon has more proof marks on the quillon and serial number "N 46996". It matches the scabbard. It is hard to read but with a flashlight directly aimed at it you can see it. This scabbard is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age. There is no overall damage, but there is a lot of oxidation on it. The metal frog loop is securely fastened to the body. The mouth, body and finial have all oxidized. There are some scrapes where the oxidation has scraped off. There is no original finish left. The scabbard has the serial number "N 46996" which matches the bayonet. It is a little less challenging to see than the bayonet, but they match! This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your French Gras M1874 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. With a little clean up this could look very nice. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
