Description: For sale is a nice hard paste biscuit figurine made by Sevres in 1900 (I think as the date code is a bit hard to read). The figure is of Janot played by the actor Volanges in the comedy Dorvigny, Janot ou Les battus paient l’amende. The figure is based on the scene where the young man is in front of his girlfriend’s house and asked her to throw down the door key. Unfortunately it was her father who heard him and so the contents of the chamberpot were thrown over his head instead. He then utters the popular line “c’en est!” which I think means - that does it! This figurine was originally modeled under the direction of the famous Boizot in the 18th century and became a very popular model - even Marie Antoinette bought one! The figure is wearing a bonnet hat with a hole in it, a coat, nice shoes and shorts / breeches. He is holding the lantern and supported by a stone pillar. Superbly modeled and left in the white to show off all that detail that would be lost if it were glazed. I love this piece! He is marked on the back of the base with their triangular mark with the letter S over the year code 1900. The artist monogram AB next to that. Not a model one comes across often at all! It is larger than many so makes a great impression. The figure is about 12.75 inches tall with the base having a diameter of 4.5 inches.
