Description: Celebrating the American history of toys.... Here is a wonderful antique, cast iron, bell pull toy produced for the the 400th Anniversary of Columbus coming to America which was first sold at the Chicago Columbus Exposition of 1893 and designed by Charles Bailey for the Gong Bell Toy Co. Later these toys were produced by J. & E. Stevens Co., Cromwell, Conn. This particular toy, No. 95, was made by the Gong Bell Toy Company and features four individual men rowing in a boat with wheels attached to the base. There is a bronze bell which hangs on the bow of the boat that rings when the toy is pulled and the iron hammer strikes the bell. Along one side of the toy it is marked in raised letters: "Pat'd Oct. 31, 1893." It measures just over seven inches long with lots of floral detail including wings, religious cross and animal head. Overall condition is very good with original gold paint except that one of the larger wheels (with a small scroll design piece missing as shown) has broken off and needs to be repaired, no other damages or repairs. The removable Columbus figure is also missing. Still, this rarely found, antique toy makes a wonderful historical shelf piece. Further note: a wonderful example complete with original labeled wooden box sold at Bertoia's November 2017 auction for $4800.
