Description: Jolly Friar" is the title of John Ruhl's design, according to an early Armor Bronze catalogue. He surely does look to be enjoying whatever he is reading. My guess is "The Canterbury Tales."Bronze-clad, a manufacturing process by which a skin of bronze was deposited on a plaster form through electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel, and heft of solid bronze yet were affordable by the middle class.One of those companies was Armor Bronze, operating in NYC at least as early as the 19-teens. Armor's customary shield logo is formed into the sides. Ruhl's name is on the backs. Circa 1922. Condition is great. No breaks, cracks, dents or mashed portions. Paint is original, does show wear and discoloration due to age. Both pieces sit flat and stable.These are hefty: 6 1/2 inches tall; base is 4 1/2 inches X 4 inches, though some portions of the design extend a little further.
