Glazier delivers an emotional firsthand account of prison life in the Confederacy. Willard Glazier grew up poor on a farm in St. Lawrence County and dropped out of school to make a living as a trapper in the wilds of the North Country. In 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army and was assigned to cavalry and the 2nd Regiment of New York. On 1863 he was captured by the enemy in a Civil War battle at Buckland Mills, VA. He escaped from confinement in Columbia, S.C,. was recaptured near Springfield, GA, escaped again and with the help of several African-Americans, made his way safely back home to Albany. He served with valor until the end of the war and was promoted to brevet general for "meritorious service." CONDITION: This book is in poor condition. Binding is intact but cover is very worn, ripped, soiled, scuffed, stained, torn, and tattered .Pages have turned yellow from age. Foxing to paper commensurate with age. There are some scribble marks and a sticker from the original owner on the endpaper at the front of the book.
