Description: This is an original portrait of a soldier who fought in the Spanish American War. Baxter McClain held the rank of Captain, according to the family’s handwritten note. He later became a senator for Kansas. As a soldier, I assume he was Calvary, as he appears to be holding a riding crop. Historical documentation says that he belonged to the Seventh Ohio Regiment of Volunteer Infantry, and was captain of Company F. On heavy photographer’s stock, was taken at Board & McDermott of Coshocton, Ohio. I have seen other photos from this photographer dated in the 1890s: this war was waged in 1898. Bend near the bottom. This photograph measures about 6 ½ x 4 ½”.
