Description: ANTIQUE CHINESE SEAL SCRIPT (ZHUANSHU) HANGING SCROLL OF MOUNT TAI IN SHANGDONG PROV. QING DYNASTY. For your consideration: a stunningly beautiful antique Chinese hanging scroll featuring an idyllic and breathtaking view of Mount Tai ('Mountain of Tranquility'), one of the five sacred mountains of ancient China. The calligraphy present is the Chinese seal script, an ancient form of Chinese writing introduced as a common form of writing during the Qin Dynasty and later evolved into a ceremonial form of writing during the Han Dynasty. Over time, seal scripts fell out of favor, only to be revitalized once again during the Qing Dynasty in artistic circles, largely for ceremonial purposes to evoke a sense of romanticism for the ancient ways. The hanging scroll substrate materials are made of rice paper and silk, and the actual image portion of the hanging scroll is made of rice paper. The hanging scroll measures an overall length of 74.25" x 24.50." The actual image portion measures 30.75" x 20.75." The hanging scroll has a wooden stave/bar to which the scroll is attached by metal brads. The ends of the stave/bar have lacquered knobs (Jiku). The stave/bar also has the correct linen tether used to roll up the scroll or to hang it. The hanging scroll bears no evidence of any damage. The scroll is in overall very good condition commensurate with age. The poem is translated as: "Spring is in the air. See the peaceful mountain and listen to the murmur of the water there. Spring is in the air."
