Description: Antique PRIMITIVE BENTWOOD DRY MEASURE. This antique bentwood 2 quart dry goods measure is made of oak with an overlapped tapered joint. The joint is secured with 8 iron nails and the one piece bottom board is pegged to the sides. The outside has a stained finish that has darkened with age. The inside is unfinished and there is worn branded lettering on the bottom that says "DANIEL CRAGIN MANUFACTURRES & SEALER, WILTON NH". It measures 7" in diameter x 4" tall. There are some chips & splits along top edge. In 1858, Daniel L. Cragin built a "Measure Mill" in Wilton, NH. In 1885, Daniel Cragin sold full sets or "nests"; iron bound, varnished, plain, or unsealed (rough). Measures were made in five sizes, the smallest being one quart (5 3/4" diameter), then two quart (7" diameter x 4 3/8" tall), four quart (9" diameter), single peck (11" diameter x 6 1/4" tall), and one-half bushel (14" diameter x 8" tall). In 1909 the mill was acquired by Whitney Morse Frye and the "Fryes Measure Mill" is still operating today.
