Antique English Hallmarked Chester 9 CT Gold & Seed Pearl Brooch in Jewelers Box

Description: This is an Antique English Hallmarked 9 CT Gold and Seed Pearl Brooch in a Jeweler's Box. We also have a variety of antique and vintage jewelry include gold and sterling pieces, including hallmarked pieces from England, Scotland, and Mexico, as well as signed US pieces including Native American and Southwest pieces, European and Asian pieces, and designer signed vintage costume jewelry. The brooch has a gold bar with an applied three leave clover at the center. Each leaf of the clover has a small gray seed pearl. The pin has an antique style hand formed C style clasp, a further indication of its age. My understanding is the more modern style of locking clasp began to come into more common usage circa 1910. The photos are closeups; the size relative to a US dime is shown in one of the photos. The brooch is about 4.8 CM long (1 57/64"). The brooch weighs 2.52 grams as seen on our jewelry scale (the added gold colored chain and safety pin are neither marked nor tested, so either or both may not be gold). The brooch has added findings: a ring added to the back of the bar. Clipped to this with a tiny removable clasp is a chain with a gold colored safety pin at the other end. This appears to have been done to convert the brooch for optional use as a chatelaine style brooch with something hanging from the chain or a laveliere style brooch. Since the chain can be unclipped at the brooch end, the piece now has the versatility to be worn as a chatelaine or in its original configuration and appearance. The ring supporting the added findings was applied right over the date letter, and consequently the date letter is cannot be seen, and thus is not available to date the piece. I believe the brooch is formally antique, and likely 19th Century, but we do not know the age specifically. The jeweler's case is from a firm in Davenport, in Davenport, in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. I don't know for sure if the box is original to the brooch, but since the assay / town mark on the brooch is Chester, and since Chester is only 40 miles from Davenport, it seems quite likely that brooch may have originally been sold in this case. The brooch is hallmarked as follows (as seen in a closeup photo): Maker's Mark - appears to be "M D". Each letter is in a separate cartouche with a pair of lines connecting the two cartouches. I was not able to find an attribution for this maker. Gold purity marks - a cartouche with a 9 followed by a cartouche with ".375", both denoting 9 CT gold.(9/24 = .375). Assay / Town mark - The Chester mark consisting of the Town Coat of Arms with a sword and three sheaves of wheat. Date letter - As noted above, due to the added ring for the chatelaine chain, the date letter is not visible.Condition: Brooch The brooch is in excellent condition and we will guarantee your satisfaction with your purchase, subject to your acceptance of the chatelaine modification. Jeweler's case The case is overall in good condition, especially considering the age. There are the following condition issues to be note: wear / separation of the lining at the top of the lid. Tearing and heavy wear of the material between the lid and the bottom section that helps limit how far back the lid can go. As it current is, the lid goes back approximately 60 degrees (leaving a 30 degree increment between the lid and the table surface behind). Some quite minor scuffing and wear on the top and sides.
