Description: From our personal collection, a handsome, 18th century French blue and white faience oval platter. This antique French cul noir plate is from the late 1700's or early 1800's. A type of blue and white faience in style among the wealthy of France during this period, it was produced both in Rouen and Auxerre. It was also exported to America, with 18th century shards found in excavations in New Orleans. The term "cul noir" means black bottom, referring to the dark back of the pottery. This one shows only gently it's appropriately 225 years of French cuisine. Great, authentic period patina! 14 inches by 10 inches.
