Description: ANTIQUE RESTORED - IN VERY GOOD WORKING CONDITION - NO CRACKS OR FORGING DELAMINATIONS - SHAVING SHARP - EVENLY TEMPERED STEEL - POLISHED POLL - SEE PHOTOS This is a hand forged antique 1800-1900s mid-sized carpenter or cooper hewing hand adze for medium sized timbers or staves. Comes from the Lot wine making region of southern France where cooperage was a particularly important trade up until the advent of stainless steel tanks. Fully restored and sharpened to a robust, yet razor sharp edge. While sharpening, I found that the steel was particularly hard and abrasion resistant indicating a thorough hardening. Ready to work wood. Cutting edge is 4 3/4 inches long and weight is 2lb 10oz. Adze head only, NO HANDLE. Would be very simple to haft one yourself, particularly with a lathe. Handles used with this style are normally straight or slightly recurved away from the cutting edge and about 8-10 inches long. FREE SHIPPING
