Description: Fabulous English sterling wine coaster with a deep, true repousse grape vine and acanthus motif, and gadroon edge. 6 ¼” in diameter, 2 ¼” tall. 10.5 troy ounces, though of course that includes the wooden bottom. This old piece has seen a thing or two, it has aged charm. At some point the bottom wood must have been replaced, you can see the dents around the bottom lip where it was bent and hammered back into place. It wobbles a little on the table, I guess the wood isn’t perfectly flat or there’s a bulge under the felt. There are some pinprick holes in the repousse, which you only see when you hold it up to the light. There was a repair to a crack on the lip, see the photos, I’ve circled it. There’s also some dark spots of disease along the rim. There’s a lightly struck makers mark of S.C.Y. for S C Younge & Co, in business in Sheffield 1813-31. The last mark apparently is a combo of the date mark and the Sheffield mark.
