Description: Antique Josiah Wedgwood "Cairo" A4682 Polychrome Transferware Dinner Plate. Measurements: This plate measures 10-1/4" in Width. Pattern Description: Blue/Grey Band with Red & Gold Floral Insets and Gold Arches, Center Scene with Red & Gold Floral. Red Trim. Made in England by Josiah Wedgwood. This pattern was produced in other monochrome color schemes as well. Maker's Marks: This plate has several impressed marks on the rear. First is the "WEDGWOOD" impressed mark, which looks to have been made from a single stamp versus individual letter stamps. Above that is a letter "P" (or "d"?) lying down compared to Wedgwood. The final impressed marks seem to be "C-T-J(or I)" with an upside down "M" above. The plate also has printed marks as part of the backstamps. First, the pattern number "A4682" is handwritten in red; it seems that the '2' is underlined. I do not know if this has any significance. Finally, a Blue printed and framed "CAIRO' appears. Notes: One obvious omission is "England" from these marks, thus dating this piece prior to 1891. Secondly, the "CTJ" seems to be a three letter code related to the date the plate was made. In 1860 the Wedgwood factory started marking its wares with the date of manufacture impressed in each piece as part of a three letter code. The first letter of the code represents the month of manufacture, the second identified the potter who threw the shape and the last letter signifying the year the piece was made starting with O for 1860. Base on the cypher of dates used, CTJ does not fit the code sequence used after 1860, as the letter "C" does not relate to any month; "I" however could be the year 1880 (or if J, 1881). One seller elsewhere, with a similar plate in a red color scheme rather than blue, claims the 'CAIRO' mark to indicate dating from the late 1700s or early 1800s. I will leave the speculation to you, the buyer. Condition: Excellent Plus condition for it's age. There are no chips, cracks or crazing. Utensil marks are very light. Light scuffing to the red trim, possibly from a plate holder for display. Negligible shelf wear.
