Description: Original publisher's hand-colored map of ancient Mauritania, Numidia, and Africa which are modern-day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. There are two inset maps at the bottom that show parts of the north African coast controlled by the Carthaginians. The inset map on the left shows the coast of modern-day Tunisia and Libya, and the inset map to the right shows a closer view of the modern-day Tunisian coast near Sinus Carthaginiensis (Gulf of Tunis) and Sinus Neapolitanus (Gulf of Hammamet) where the capitol of Carthage was located. The maps feature beautiful watercolored outlines in blue, yellow, and pink around country or regional borders (pink represents Carthaginian territory). Hispania (Spain) is shown to the north. The Atlas Mountains and the region of Gaetulia are depicted to the south. Major cities and natural features such as mountains and rivers are also included. Scales of distance in Roman and English miles on map of Mauritania and Numidia; scale of distance in Roman miles on left inset map and English miles on right inset map. No date, circa 1836-1851. Map with margins measures 13 1/4" x 10"; actual map area measures 11 1/2" x 8 3/8." The left inset map measures 7 3/4" x 2 3/8"; the right inset map measures 3 1/2" x 3 1/4." Map is intact with no tears on sides or fold. There is toning & foxing throughout. The center fold line has toning. Lines of latitude and longitude also included. The following is printed beneath the map: "Philadelphia, Blanchard & Lea." and "Eng. by G. E. Sherman, N.Y." "23." printed in lower-right corner outside of the neatline. Blanchard & Lea (fl. c. 1836-1851) was a Philadelphia-based publishing house and successor to Matthew Carey & Company. George E.
