Description: 'A map of the World as described by Justin' by Herman Moll 1705 Copper engraved map on hand laid paper. Later hand colouring Herman Moll (1654- 1722) was born in Holland and came to London about 1680 and worked there as an engraver for mapmakers such as Christopher Browne, Robert Morden and Philip Lea. He set up his own business in about 1700 and over a few years he became one of the foremost map publishers in England. His prolific output covered a wide range of loose maps and atlases. His work enjoyed a high reputation and much of his work was copied by other publishers. Moll was involved in intellectual life through the Royal Academy. He was friends with Robert Boyle and Robert Hooke and acquainted with Jonathan Swift who mentions his maps in ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ Christopher Browne (active 1684- 1712) was an English cartographer, globe maker and publisher at the Globe near the west end of St Pauls Church Yard, London. He worked with Robert Morden and inherited many of his maps and continued publishing Morden’s work.
