Description: This is a charming and intriguing Antique Old 19th c. Italian Romani Gypsy Girls Musician Portrait Oil Painting on canvas, depicting two Romani Gypsy women who are playing various instruments, such as a guitar and large tambourine. The women have joyful expressions, and wear ornate jewelry and colorful clothes, which is synonymous with European Gypsy culture. Behind them, a tall stone wall and grape vines can be seen. I believe this artwork was painted in Italy and was likely a European Grand Tour souvenir purchased by a wealthy American tourist visiting Italy at the turn of the century, and later mounted in an impressive, gilded wood frame back home. This theme is a very popular subject in Italian artwork during this time period (1890's - 1910's.) This painting appears to be unsigned, but perhaps you recognize the artist or their work? Approximately 23 1/2 x 27 1/2 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 18 x 22 inches. Good condition for a century of age, with some light speckles of paint loss, flea bite pinholes scattered throughout the canvas, and mild age-related craquelure at the upper edge (please see photos.)
