Japanese hand written markings on the bottom . 4. Glaze results in a cracked appearance throughout vase, can be seen best in picture of bottom of the vase 5. Satsuma Vases were often made as multiple pieces of art to make a display. The markings on the bottom dictated the placement of that piece in the display. This vase's markings translate to " right six" in English, advising it is the sixth piece to the right in the display. The colors used as well as style of the vase and markings suggests it is from the Meiji period 1868 - 1912. During the Meiji period, a different type of Satsuma emerged, one of lighter body color combined with the addition of lighter glazes, such as blues, blue-green, iron-red and eventually, gilding. A clear glaze was applied over the light body producing a very fine craquelure, which defined this type of ware. Prior to 1870, no Satsuma was signed or marked, but as production grew during the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Satsuma began to reflect Western aesthetics, with designs expanding from simply florals to landscapes, figures, animals and mythological and religious themes, all to appeal to the Western collector.
